TheplotconcernsamadscientistattemptingtomakeanewAdamandEveinthewakeofasuicidalplaguethatisravagingtheworld.Lockedupinhislabhisexperimentsgodifferentlytheneitherheorweexpect.Someofitissilly(Theboltsintheneck,thewrestlingmoves...),allofitistouchingandthoughtprovoking. Andthoughthefilmisdensewithsubtext,itisalsostunninglyphotographedandrichinatmosphereanddetail.TheperformancesareallamazingandKawamura'ssensitivehandlingofthestrange,delicaterelationshipsbetweenthecharactersresultsinanemotionallycharged,angst-riddentragedy. Thescenesoftheconfused,troubledmonsterhurtlingthroughafog-shroudedforestatnightarememorableandstriking,asisabrillianthomemovie-stylemontageofthefilm'smorecuriouscharactersenjoyingapreciousafternoonatthebeach.KawamuracreatesresonatingvisualpoetryofhorrorandsadnessbarelysightedsinceToddBrowning'sclassic"Freaks".
